"Engineering problems are under-defined, there are many solutions, good, bad and indifferent. The art is to arrive at a good solution. This is a creative activity, involving imagination, intuition and deliberate choice."
- Ove Arup
"Engineering ... to define rudely but not inaptly, is the art of doing that well with one dollar, which any bungler can do with two after a fashion."
 - Arthur Mellen Wellington
The Economic Theory of Railway Location (1911)
"Go for civil engineering, because civil engineering is the branch of engineering which teaches you the most about managing people. Managing people is a skill which is very, very useful and applies almost regardless of what you do."
- Sir John Harvey Jones

"Why Engineers Don't Write Recipe Books:
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
532.35 cm3 gluten
4.9 cm3 NaHCO3
4.9 cm3 refined halite
236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride
177.45 cm3 crystalline C12H22O11
177.45 cm3 unrefined C12H22O11
4.9 cm3 methyl ether of protocatechuic aldehyde
Two calcium carbonate-encapsulated avian albumen-coated protein
473.2 cm3 theobroma cacao
236.6 cm3 de-encapsulated legume meats (sieve size #10)
To a 2 litre jacketed round reactor vessel (reactor #1) with an overall heat transfer coefficient of about 100 Btu/°F-ft2-hr, add ingredients one, two and three with constant agitation. In a second 2 litre reactor vessel with a radial flow impeller operating at 100 rpm, add ingredients four, five, six, and seven until the mixture is homogenous. To reactor #2, add ingredient eight, followed by three equal volumes of the homogenous mixture in reactor #1. Additionally, add ingredient nine and ten slowly, with constant agitation. Care must be taken at this point in the reaction to control any temperature rise that may be the result of an exothermic reaction.

Using a screw extrude attached to a #4 nodulizer, place the mixture piece-meal on a 316SS sheet (300 x 600 mm). Heat in a 460°K oven for a period of time that is in agreement with Frank & Johnston's first order rate expression (see JACOS, 21, 55), or until golden brown.

Once the reaction is complete, place the sheet on a 25°C heat-transfer table, allowing the product to come to equilibrium."

"Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been."
- Albert Einstein
"Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it."
 - Sir Henry Royce
"To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be."

"An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an engineer -- you're in the wrong place."
So, the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements. After awhile, they've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.
One day, God calls Satan up on the telephone and says with a sneer, ‘So, how's it going down there in hell?’
Satan replies, ‘Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next.’
God replies, ‘What??? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake -- he should never have gotten down there; send him up here.’
Satan says, ‘No way. I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him.’ God says, ‘Send him back up here or I'll sue.’
Satan laughs uproariously and answers, ‘Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?’"

"What is commonly overlooked in using the computer is the fact that the central goal of design is still to obviate failure, and thus it is critical to identify exactly how a structure may fail. The computer cannot do this by itself ."
 - Henri Petroski
"The ideal engineer is a composite ... He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems."
- N. W. Dougherty
"Sometimes I look at the number of students in the queues each year and I wonder how come people are so eager to get into engineering and end all chances of a normal, happy easy going life."
- Harshvardhan Pande
"A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering."
- Freeman Dyson
"Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards."
- Aldous Huxley
"Nothing exists except atoms and empty space. Everything else is opinion."
- Democritus
"To understand is hard. Once one understands, action is easy."
- Sun Yat-Sen
"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
- Albert Einstein
"Not to know is bad. Not to want to know is worse. Not to hope is unthinkable. Not to care is unforgivable"
- Nigerian saying
